Instagram Round-up: Skin Care Edition

I'll be the first one to tell you, I've been pretty lucky when it comes to my skin. In high school, I dealt with breakouts every now and then, but other than that I had "good" skin throughout my teens and into my early twenties (other than it being very, very sensitive...but that's another story).

And then all that good luck ran out around the time I turned 24.

For the better part of a year, I dealt with HORRIBLE, HUGE, CONSISTENT breakouts that started at the corner of my mouth, moved down to my chin and onto my jawline...oh, and all over my cheeks. Like, WHAT?! They weren't the surface level pimples, either. They came from (what felt like) the depths of my soul, with roots that reached all the way to my toes. As soon as one went away, three more popped up. And I was trying everything, y'all. I saw a dermatologist, tried prescription topical treatments, washed my pillowcases all the time, washed my face twice a day every day, cleaned out my diet, and so much more. I even stopped wearing face make up for the better part of 3 months, which was fine until we had to go to a wedding or event.

I really think it was the nakey-face life, paired with my discovery of Lola Jane Naturals, that helped to clear up most of my skin problems - goodbye horrible, consistent breakouts. But I was left with significant scarring that made it look like I still had acne, when really it was just angry red scars that were left behind. That's when I reached out to my Instagram followers for some serious HELP...and y'all came through with so many tips and tricks! I had to share this with y'all!

What's worked for me:

Lola Jane Naturals Mario Badescu Skincare Essentials
  • Lola Jane Naturals - I'm so totally in love with this because it's completely changed my face! I use it every day, typically morning and night, and it's put a stop to my horrible, consistent breakouts and given me a more even complexion. Plus, it's all natural and a woman-owned small business (she even writes little notes on the order forms). I tried the mini set first, to make sure my skin liked it, and then purchased the full set
  • Mario Badescu Whitening Mask - This was what I tried first from all of the InstaRecs I got anndddd it's fantastic. I use it 2 or 3 times a week to help with the scarring on my chin, jawline and cheeks. I LOVE how it makes my face feel after I take it off and I've seen a HUGE improvement in my scars and skin tone. I go nakey-face 99% of the time since I started using this because my skin just looks so bright and even; PLUS, my scars are almost all gone.
  • Mario Badescu Drying Lotion - MAGICAL! In the event that I have a stress or that-time-of-the-month breakout, I put this drying lotion on over night and the spots are almost entirely gone the next morning. Where has this been all my life?! Check out this video to learn about it + how to apply.

Recommendations from my Instagram followers:

Glossier - According to a few of you, the "supers" are amazing! "It's 3 serums you use, depending on the time of the month" and what you think your face needs. I also heard great things about the RICH moisturizer. All in all, it seems like "their products are super natural and really work" for a lot of people.

Acutane - I did hear about this one a few times and know several people who had GREAT results from it. It's a "total game changer" for those of you who have "really bad breakouts" and have tried "everything under the sun with no results."   **Please note, this is a prescription medication - consult with your doctor to learn more and make the best decision for yourself.**

Coalface by Lush - I had never heard of this before, but it's "an awesome cleansing bar that keeps breakouts at bay during that time of the month. Plus, it travels really well!" And it's by Lush know it's good!

Aloe - "Aloe aloe aloe!!  Right on your face, just make sure it's the clear kind that's all natural with no additives (maybe try Walmart and CVS)." Okay, this honestly threw me for a loop! I have heard of drinking aloe to heal your gut, but never for your face! I don't have a specific product to link to, but I think this might be a good place to start, if you're interested.

The Ordinary - "Changed my skin forever. They have tons of different serums, each for a specific thing, and they're all $10 and under." I looked this up on Sephora, too, and it had GREAT reviews!

Chemical Peels and HydraFacials -  "Helped my skin so much. My skin is more even and it's helped for smoother skin and smaller pores." Um, YES PLEASE! I've heard about these at least 3 times now, so basically I have to try them because y'all seem to adore them. **Consult with an esthetician in your area to see what would be best for you!**

Origins - "AMAZING on my skin. I use the hydrating kit which is light blue, but I've heard amazing things about the Origins mushroom line which is dark green. Really good for spots and helps with inflammation. I also use the St. Ives blackhead scrub in the morning to keep acne at bay and then the serums and lotions morning and night." I checked out this website andholy wowthere's so many goodies that I want to try!

Mirco-Roller + Serum - "I've definitely seen an improvement in my skin! You apply the serum, use the roller on your face (the company has a tutorial on their site) and then finish with another layer of serum. My skin has improved immensely!"   These came so highly recommended that I currently have it in my shopping cart.

Tea Tree Oil - This has been deemed a "lifesaver" by several of you! It's great "...on pimples. Seems to speed up their demise. Also dries a bit, so plenty of moisturizer afterwards."   I don't have a specific product to link to, but I found an article about the do's and don'ts of Tea Tree Oil, if you're interested.

Aztec Clay Mask - This was mentioned very briefly, but upon digging a little deeper into's also in my shopping cart to try out in the future!

Let me know what you try and, as usual, I'll keep you updated on my progress + what I try!
